Privacy Window Film, "I want to see out", but don't want anyone to see in".

This is a concern of many window film shoppers. How do you achieve privacy with the addition of window film? Well, there are a couple of ways, but none of them include 24 hour privacy. A reflective film like Night Vision 15, can give you daytime privacy, but it just isn’t possible for it to provide privacy at night, and none of our solar films will. The reason for this is lighting. Whichever side of the glass has the most light, will be the side that is most visible.

I loved Police Academy and Naked Gun movies growing up. I have very sophisticated taste in cinema. Anyhow, there is a scene in I believe Police Academy 1, 2, 3, 4 or whatever that comes to me when I think of explaining privacy film to a customer. They’re conducting a Police Lineup with several different men. The Witness who is about to identify the suspect is visibly nervous, and is assured no one can seem him, because it’s dark where they are and light where the suspect is. Right as the Witness points at the Suspect, because this is Police Academy, someone of course pops in and turns on the light. The Suspect sees the Witness, and of course starts yelling “I’m gonna kill you” or something along those lines.

It’s a great example of how lighting works with regards to privacy, and how window film helps that. 3M does have some terrific one way films. These are the films you might see on the glass in a police interrogation room, however without specific lighting controls, they are not able to provide absolute one way visibility either.

Now lets get back to something less dramatic and talk about how we can use window film to make our home more private. There are two options. You can go with a solar window film like Night Vision 15, this will provide great daytime privacy. There is just one caveat. It will not provide privacy at night. You’ll need to draw the curtains after sunset.

If you’re looking at adding a film for daytime privacy, the most important number you’ll want to see on a window film data sheet is the amount of exterior light reflected. The higher this number the better. Our most reflective residential film is 3M Night Vision 15. There are more reflective ones, but your HOA might not be happy with those choices.

Night Vision 15 is a great product for anyone trying to achieve daytime privacy, as it’s reflective but also attractive. It is approximately 39% reflective on clear double pane glass, and generally HOA approved. There are more reflective films, but they’re typically silver, or bronze. Something you’d see on a 1980’s skyscraper, but not something you’d want to see on your home.

3M DECORATIVE FILM OPTIONS

Another great option for full time privacy is a frosted film. These are a great choice because they’ll add privacy to your glass without blocking the light, and there are tons of options when it comes to a decorative or frosted film. The caveat here is that you cannot see out.

While we still don’t have the perfect option for one way film yet, we do have some great options that’ll add privacy to your home, while providing many other benefits from glass efficiency to better aesthetics.

"How Much Does Window Film Cost?

This question comes up a lot here at Solar Vision, and I’m sure other window film companies too. Aside from being asked by customers when they call, it’s usually one of the most popular searches when people click on our Google Ad. Unfortunately when a customer clicks on ours or any window film page, the answer is not clear at all, and most likely not available. Why is this? Why isn’t window film pricing transparent? The short answer is much like carpet or tile, there are so many variables that can change the price you’ll be quoted. However via this BLOG, I’d like to at least help you answer the question as to whether or not the average price of having film applied to your basic window is of value to you.

As a window film dealer, I’m biased. I think window film is a no-brainer. Why? Well, because it can be one of the most important home improvements you can make. Window Film is there to protect you, and your home from heat, glare, and UV Rays. This can save you on your energy bills, make your house cooler, and more comfortable, while reducing the fading of your furniture, flooring, and window coverings. With all these benefits why not look more seriously into window film?

Unlike other home improvements window film is inconspicuous. This might make it a more difficult purchase psychologically, because you don’t see or notice this passive system once in place. It’s not super fun like a new 72 inch TV with Dolby surround sound, or a new couch you just purchased at Room and Board. No one is going to really notice your new window film, like they would notice a new sofa, or 72 inch TV. Your Mother In Law probably won’t comment on your new window film. However, she might comment on how much more comfortable and cooler your house is.

Example of Double Hung Window

Example of Double Hung Window

Okay, commercial over. Let’s go back to the price. Window Film is generally charged per square foot, it seems odd, but most of the time, your square foot price is all-encompassing. It includes the material, labor, tax, and all the other cost associated with running a business, those items coupled with the hopes of making a profit is accounted for in your total price. Without going into all the math, let’s just say on average you’re probably going to pay between $15-$20 per SQFT to have solar window film installed. Window film is going to run you between $200-$400 for a basic double hung window, dependent on product type. This is about the same price as quality window coverings, which will most likely fade and ruin over the course of a few years without window film. I digress…one more plug.

These numbers are not absolute by any means, and different companies may charge different prices dependent on their cost of material, labor, and whether or not they have overhead like rent, and insurance (I highly recommend using a company with insurance). However I hope this helps get you closer to making that phone call to have your windows tinted.

Please also keep in mind other factors, like french panes, these windows will cost much more than a standard double hung window, or architectural windows that are large, and may require special equipment to reach, like the ones pictured below. These are all variables that could add additional cost to your window film installation. There are also variables that can lower the cost, like total square footage. The more the merrier in the window tint world. This means the more windows you have filmed, the more likely your are to receive a square footage discount which will lower your per square foot price.

Much like carpet or tile, what you pay and what your neighbor pays can vary. That’s because window film is a custom project specific to your home or office.

***Pricing is not absolute, many variables come into consideration for window film pricing. Many companies may even have project minimums. Solar Visions minimum price is $650.00. The pricing provided above is for educational purposes only and is not an estimate from Solar Vision Inc., or 3M.***

3M Window Film Conference

Every other year 3M host a conference for their Prestige Window Film Dealers. They try to pick a nice warm climate for this 3 day conference and this year it was Puerto Rico. I think it’s been almost 6 years since they hosted a conference in Puerto Rico which was prior to Hurricane Maria. While getting to Puerto Rico is no easy feat, and takes 2 airplanes and about 10 hours from Denver, I was still excited to return to such a lovely island with great people.

The 3M Dealer Conference is an opportunity for us Dealers to learn about the new innovations in window film, along with the best selling and installation processes from the Experts, and Engineers who develop the products we provide to our customers. Our meeting sessions ranged from topics on Cities of the Future, 3M Di-Noc, and updates on selling 3M Ultra Safety Films products. It’s a lot to take in, but coupled with a lot of opportunities to visit and network with other Dealers, and afternoon Catamaran trips, it goes by quicker than you can take notes.

This year, myself and our General Manger Lucinda attended the 3M Window Film Dealer Conference. We’re looking forward to implementing the things we learned at this years conference into our day to day operations. We’ll also reflect back to a time in Puerto Rico when it was 82 degrees, and we were on a Catamaran whilst currently surviving the subzero temps in Denver this week.

The following pictures will not reflect a work trip! :) I swear we were working…

Dylan being a good sport about company photos a few years ago. :)

Every quarter the Solar Vision team has the opportunity to recognize one of their co-workers for our Peer Recognition Award. This November, our team recognized Dylan Kawabata. Dylan has been with Solar Vision since August of 2016. We’ve had the opportunity to watch him grow from a Student with part time hours, to a College Graduate and full time Field Supervisor!

When Dylan first joined our team we had been looking for another Installer, and were having a hard time filling positions. A friend of ours told us he knew of a kid from Hawaii that “knows how to tint windows”, and he had moved to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado. Wow! Our minds were blown, and we welcomed the introduction. I remember the first time Dylan walked through our doors. He showed up for his interview wearing flip flops! ( he is from Hawaii after all). We hired him on the spot, and it was one of the best hire’s we’ve ever made.

Dylan is an Expert Installer, with a “cool as a cucumber” personality. No matter the difficulty of the project or the obstacles in the way, we can can count on Dylan to find the best solutions. All while still maintaining a good attitude. Something all of us here at Solar Vision can appreciate.

Along with having almost 5 years under his belt here at Solar Vision, Dylan has many years of experience working at his Dad’s company C-Thru Window Tinting in Kailua-Kona Hawaii. There he learned the ropes of this industry. He’s an asset to the Solar Vision team, and very much deserves the recognition. -Shelley Meador

3M Daylight Redirecting Film

It was approximately 6 years ago that I gave my first Day Lighting Presentation for an Architectural firm in Aspen, CO (rough life, I know). The presentation was in an effort to promote 3M’s Daylight Redirecting Film, their newest product at that time. While the original product came with a few hiccups, over the years 3M was able to develop it into a simple adhesive application for clerestory glass (upper windows) . Reception for this new product was great, at every Architectural Event, Daylight Redirecting Film samples and brochures flew off the table. It was a cutting edge application that we thought would be all over architectural specifications in the coming years, however we were wrong.

What happened? Why isn’t Daylight Redirecting Film on every school, recreation center, box store, and building of any kind receiving direct sunlight? Why haven’t these revolutionary technologies caught on? In my opinion, rough timing. Unfortunately the debut of products like Daylight Redirecting Film were overshadowed by tragic events that brought security film to the forefront. This was good and bad. While it’s been good for business and has added a layer of safety and security to many projects, it’s halted the original driving force of our industry which is energy reduction, and efficiency.

90% of the Architectural Presentations I’ve given in the past 5 years have been on Safety and Security Film. I hope that in the coming years this will start leaning towards energy efficiency again. Security films have brought a new found popularity to the window film industry. My hope is that we can use this popularity as a way to bring more attention to the energy efficient window film products that 3M and other manufacturers have developed over the years.

While it’s been 6 years, our excitement for these products hasn’t changed. Solar Vision Inc. just completed another Daylight Redirecting Film project at a bank here in Denver, and the outcome is amazing. 3M Daylight Redirecting Film is a product that reaches beyond my expectations of what window film can do.

At Solar Vision , we believe that almost every business and building can benefit from 3M Daylight Redirecting Film. Along with utilizing the sun, a natural resource to provide interior lighting, it is also the only window film product on the market that can eliminate glare, without eliminating the light. Check out the video below to learn more about 3M Daylight Redirecting Film, and call Solar Vision Inc. 303-862-6376 to learn more about all the energy efficient window film options we offer.

Why Exterior Film?

One of the questions we get the most as a window film company is “does it go on the outside or inside”? Our answer is “both”! Generally window film is applied to the interior portion of your glass. This is great for durability, and access, and while interior window films perform great, sometimes they’re just not enough, and that’s where exterior film comes into play.

Exterior window film can be a great option for a couple of reasons. The number one is performance! Exterior film reduces the heat in its tracks. The heat is absorbed prior to even hitting your glass. Since the heat is absorbed on the first surface, this significantly reduces if not eliminates any potential glass breakage, while absorbing a drastic amount of heat. Another great use for exterior film is access. Skylights, and other hard to reach windows might not be accessible from the interior.

At Solar Vision Inc., our favorite product is 3M Exterior Prestige Window Film. 3M Exterior Window Films offer great performance, and come with up to a 15 year warranty. 3M Exterior Prestige Window Film is designed to last, and will keep your home or building cool, and comfortable for years to come.

This year Solar Vision Inc., along with 3M’s generous film donation, updated some window tint at Mt. St. Vincent. We also added an exterior film to some windows that were making the interior classrooms uncomfortably hot for the students and teachers.

While these film projects were difficult, our Solar Vision group had a great time. From being fed lunch (not typical when installing film) to Bryan and Heath getting a kick out of watching Susie and I remove 30 year old film. It was a super fun day, and while I still have some loss of feeling in my right thumb, I enjoyed getting my hands dirty, and working my tail off like our Installers do every day. - Shelley Meador

SOLAR VISION CUSTOM GRAPHICS

Solar Vision had the opportunity to work with a company called Blueprint here in Denver. If you haven’t heard of Blueprint, they are a super cool online company that will help you learn to make anything. Think of Pinterest, but without the Pinterest Fail.

Their in house Artist created some awesome designs for their meeting room glass, turning this blank canvas into inspirational graphics that highlight all the artistry they can teach their customers to do.

It wasn’t an easy application, but luckily at Solar Vision, our Graphics Coordinator Alex can create, produce, and install your work. Keeping everything in house from design and production to application, ensures a picture-perfect finish.

WINDOW FILM IN THE WINTER?

Definitely! The winter can be some of the most intense sunshine of the entire year. Especially for those south facing windows. Some homes with large picture windows can even become uncomfortably hot in the winter. Along with heat, the winter glare can be incredibly intense. Plus, UV rays don’t care about the temperature outside. They’ll cause just as bad, if not worse damage and fading to your homes furnishings and window coverings in the winter, as they do in the summer.

Depending on your situation you have many window film choices. If heat and glare are your main issue, then a traditional window film will work great. However if you’re also looking to retain the heat in your home while blocking the heat during those intense part of the days an insulating film might be what you need. An insulating window film like 3M Thinsulate will make your home more efficient 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Solar Control Window Film is a necessary upgrade for any home, any time of the year, and there is no better time than the winter time to make your home more comfortable year round.

Meet the Solar Vision Inc. Team

When Heath and I started this small window film business out of our garage in 2004, we had no idea it would grow to be what it is today. Originally Heath would do the installs, and I would invoice and process warranties. In the beginning we were mostly a sub-contracting window film company that other local window film companies would hire to do their installs. It worked out pretty well for a few years, and we were able to grow and bring on more installation help. However as the jobs got harder, and more demanding, we couldn't help but notice a genuine need for a legitimate window film company in Colorado's ever increasing construction market.

After hiring more Window Film Installers, and a Residential Sales Manager it was time to expand out of the home office and garage to our first commercial space. With all the new growth we needed more help, and that's when we brought on an Office Coordinator. From there the growth continued by bringing on more full time installers, a Graphic Artist, and Estimator. Solar Vision Inc. is now a team of 14 people working out of a new 6000 square foot shop, and warehouse space!

We're super proud of all the people we have on our team today. We have a fulltime office staff to answer your calls and questions, and a large install crew consisting of 3 teams that can complete your jobs quickly and efficiently. We've got our customers covered!  -Shelley Meador
